Movie review of No One Killed Jessica. Manish Bhardwaj (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub) wasn’t No One. A pampered son a politician and therefore high on the sense of power that comes with such pedigree, he cold bloodedly gunned down Jessica (Myra), a model doubling as bartender in an elite Delhi restaurant, with a dozen witnesses to the crime, just because she refused to serve him a drink.

A clear open and shut case it was, or could have been. But Manish’s powerful dad, egged on by the murder’s mother’s constant whine “mere Monu ko kucch nahin hona chahiye” no less than by his blind parental love, pulls the strings, coerces witnesses and manipulates the system to get his pyara beta and his accomplices acquitted. Scot free goes the killer, cocking a snook at everyone with his system-mocking impunity.

Not done, cries Meera Gaity (Rani Mukherjee), a feisty news reporter and anchor given to hardball journalism and smoking ciggies and mouthing profanities, not excluding the F word and the desi G word. Joining forces with Jessica’s sister Sabrina (Vidya Balan) who’s been running pillar to post to seek justice for her dead sister and also taking care of her frail parents, Meera sets out to set the wrong right. “Justice has been denied and I can’t live with it,” she yells at her boss, perched doggedly on his car’s bonnet.

And that’s what the film is primarily about: turning the tables on the powers-that-be and giving the aam aadmi one last say.

No one among us, I’m sure, is unaware of the Jessica Lal case on which the film is based. Perhaps that was the root of a niggling apprehension I had before watching No One Killed Jessica. After all what’s the point of making a film now that justice has been done and the killer is wasting away his youth and mid-age behind bars, not considering the one stray parole he got in 2009 to perform the last rites of his grandmother but was caught clubbing. If the objective of the film was mere documentation of what happened in the Jessica case, one might have better browsed through the archives of national newspapers, the headline of one having inspired the film’s title. But no. No One Killed Jessica goes beyond that. It provides a recollection to the – pardon the cliché – ‘collective conscience’ of us as a society that the gun-toting brats with influential papas and mollycoddling mommies can’t have their way if we the people, including the media, set out to see that justice is done.

Kudos to director Rajkumar Gupta – delivering another ace after his debut film Aamir – for making a brave film that keeps you hooked for the most part, dipping only slightly in the second half when it stretches on needlessly. Most impressive is his re-sketch of the entire Jessica case, with characters plucked literally out of real life and their names changed only for storytelling reasons. The witnesses turning hostile, the journalist who’s covered the Kargil war, the defence lawyer, the swish set of Delhi (caricaturized more than they should’ve have been) one after another proclaiming to have seen ‘nothing’ on that fateful night – we all know who these folks are and connecting the dots here can be a sweet sadistic exercise.

No One Killed Jessica rests equally on acting performances as on its director’s storytelling skills. Rani Mukherjee is back. Those who had written her career obit will need to do some rethinking. In a performance, that goes hardly over the top given the character’s sketch, Rani breathes fire, kicks arses, and ah! is totally at home in shooting off cuss words. Vidya Balan comes up with a restrained performance, befitting her character. Neil Bhoopalam (as key witness) and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub as the killer Manish leave their mark.

Amit Trivedi’s music, particularly the ‘Dilli Dilli’ number, stands out and so does Anay Goswami’s camerawork.

Never preachy, never facetious despite having sufficient doses of satiric humour, No One Killed Jessica is a film that everyone but kids below 18 must watch. If you are looking for a piece of good cinema with some goose bumpy moments, this is it.

Beneath the veneer of a steady smooth marriage lies the seed of temptation that needs a few swigs of wine to sprout and find an ecstatic release. No wonder that almost every character in Raat Gayi Baat Gayi seems to be cheating on his or her spouse.

Rahul (Rajat Kapoor) wakes up foggy after a night of drunken revelry at a party with a svelte and sexy babe Sophia (Neha Dhupia) but can’t clearly recall how far he went on his bed-rocking adventure with the hottie. He’s particularly worried because his wife Mitali (Iravati Harshe), who was also at the party, is withdrawn and sullen in the morning. She seems to know the truth which Rahul himself can’t recall.

So, Mr. Cheater visits his neighborhood buddy Amit (Vinay Pathak) to untangle the mystery. Amit being of little help, the duo meets up the party’s host Saxena (Dalip Tahil) who outwardly is happily married to a plump Punjabi (Navneet Nishan) but is having a fling on the side with the same hottie.

As the trio set about to piece together the jigsaw of the debauched night, we are flashbacked to the party and its colourful, droll, and drab characters. Did Rahul transgress the bounds of marital vows? Did he bed Sophia? Or is there another secret that springs up as a sting in the tale’s tail.

A wry comedy with its share of oddball characters not uncommon from the ones in previous films by the Rajat-Vinay-Neha gang, ‘Raat Gayi Baat Gayi’ gives you a slightly déjà vu feel of having been there and seen that. With Vinay once again playing a commoner who sneak peeks into porn or Rajat playing the suave smoothie or Neha playing a temptress, there’s little shock value to the film and how the characters are shaped, but for its climax which more than compensates for the sluggish interludes in an otherwise briskly unfolding tale.

The performances are doubtlessly topnotch, with even Navneet Nishan managing convincingly to play the rotund and slightly snobbish party hostess or Irawati Harshe lending a somber mystique to Rahul’s morose wife. Anuradha Menon, the inimitable VJ Lola Kutty of the small screen, tones herself down substantially.

Director Saurabh Shukla peppers the screenplay with good bouts of potent humour, but it isn’t the kind that will have you doubling up with laughter. All in all, a timepass watch.

Pants down and palms up! Give a high five to Rajkumar Hirani, whose formula of cocktailing entertainment with social messages has given us jaadu ki japphi and Gandhigiri in the past. His latest baby 3 Idiots isn’t exactly the cinematic ‘chamatkar’ it’s cracked up to be. It’s a frothy, feelgood, fun-filled, one-time-watch film that leaves you smiling but doubtful whether you wanna walk back in for another viewing.

Borrowing only scraps from Chetan Bhagat’s ‘Five Point Someone’, Hirani and co-writer Abhijat Joshi churn out some delectable idiotgiri, laced with juvenile humour and tear-shedding moments. The only trouble is that the film’s core message is hammered out so many times that by the end it begins to lose its punch.

Salt water is a good conductor of electricity. Everyone’s read it, but Rancho (Aamir Khan) applied it on his ‘pissed-off’ senior to escape getting ragged on his very first day of the Imperial Engineering College.

An Edison-in-the-making, he believes in striving for excellence rather than success, which, in fact, is the core message of the film.

But excellence can’t be had if you strive half-heartedly or fearfully or, worst, mechanically. Thereby come in three more characters - Farhan (Madhavan) who wants to be a wild life photographer but is doing engineering to fullfil his dad’s dream; Raju (Sharman Joshi), a poor lad who’s so afraid of failure that his fear has become a self-fulfilling prophecy; and Chatur (Omi) who’s a learning machine adept at mugging up books.

On top of them is the ever grimacing professor Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani), fondly called Virus, telling them that the world’s a rat race in which one has to step on another to get to the top. No wonder the ingenious Rancho is an oddball out in the herd. His questions perplex his professors. And his disdain for the education system that professes learning by rote makes him the arch foe of Virus. Sandwiched between the two foes is Virus’s doctor daughter Pia (Kareena Kapoor) who falls for Rancho but has to face up to her eccentric pa at home.

Hirani and Joshi take this basic story, spin it on its head, and make it a tale of a quest of Farhan and Raju for their lost friend Rancho, who disappeared after topping the college.

The writer duo packs in some fine humour and drama but overshoot the mark at some places. For instance, Chatur’s convocation speech in which the word ‘Chamatkar’ is replaced by ‘Balatkar’ is a gag stretched too long. And there’s too much butt baring and dropping of pants. And the screenplay too takes a circuitous route through a funeral and a wedding, both not essential to the plot.

Despite these foibles, ‘3 Idiots’ makes for an enjoyable watch, thanks to the bonhomie cracked up on screen by Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman. Aamir’s Rancho is a bouncy, fidgety genius with a golden heart.

The 44-year-old actor almost passes off as a 22-year-old collegian, bringing out in his character the juvenile buoyancy and vivacity few actors of his age can. Madhavan and Sharman give ample support from the flanks, but a word of praise needs to be reserved for Sharman who shines equally in dramatic as well as funny scenes. Kareena, sadly, has been relegated to a corner but makes her presence felt in a few well-enacted sequences, but it’s Boman Irani who comes up with the best performance in the ensemble with his brilliant portrayal of an eccentric professor. His jawline protruded, his brows pursed, his gait ungainly, his speech lisped, Irani is every bit the vile and virulent Virus he’s supposed to be.

Shantanu Moitra’s music and Muralidharan’s cinematography complement the flick well. Rajkumar Hirani spins a yarn that despite a few botches has its heart in the right place. For this alone, ‘3 Idiots’ definitely ought to be seen and enjoyed.

There is no end in sight to the woes of Veer and Prem, played by Fardeen Khan and Ajay Devgan. Veer, a wannabe rockstar, and Prem, a car aficionado, are good at one thing - cooking up lies and fooling other people to cover up their own truth.

Veer has been footing the bills of his luxurious life in Goa besides helping the cash-strapped Prem from the pocket money he gets from big brother Dharam (Sanjay Dutt) who doesn’t stay in Goa. Veer has lied to his brother that he’s married to Vidya (Mugdha Godse) to get thicker wads of pocket money. Prem, in turn, is married to Jhanvi (Bipasha Basu). She runs his ancestral gym with second hand treadmills that often speed up instead of stopping.

All is well, until Dharam shows up to meet his younger brother and his wife. Mistakenly, he takes Bipasha as Fardeen’s wife and Mugdha as Devgan’s girlfriend. What follows is a comedy of mistaken identities as Prem and Veer pile up lie upon lie to keep the charade going until times comes for Dharam to leave for his home in Lusoto. But then, there’s a coup in Lusoto and Dharam’s stay is extended.

On the sidelines there’s a menagerie of madcap characters including a tenant who’s eager to move into Veer’s sprawling bungalow. He’s turns up with all the furniture loaded in a tempo outside Veer’s house but gets a bashing from Dharam. Or the local don (Johnny Lever) who seems like the offspring of Sir Judah from Karz, for he talks with his cronies by jangling a spoon inside a glass.

Rohit Shetty, the director of ‘Golmaal’ series, comes up with a breezy, bouncy comedy that abounds with silliness but still packs in ample laughs. True to his signature style, the young director spices the comedy up with tons of action. Cars turn turtle, get blown, and even do the pirouette.

Ajay Devgn (with an ‘a’ flicked out of his surname) does some dangerous stunts besides showing his comic flair. He is best in the scenes with Sanjay Dutt. Playing a suspicious brother given to groping the women around him in moments of panic, Dutt becomes the catalyst for humour in many a scene. Fardeen is lovable as the over-the-top goofball. Bipasha and Mugdha are mainly there to glam up the comedy. Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra chip in with their brand of humour.

The movie could have done better without a song (Pritam) or two - they’re peppy but nothing to hum about. The action is good but the climax - when a bunch of Africans land up in Goa - gets a bit chaotic.

Still, the movie is fun to watch.

Bollywood Movie Wanted Review

‘Wanted’ is Salman Khan’s Ghajini. No, he doesn’t suffer from any short-term memory loss in the film. Rather he mouths about half a dozen times the dialogue: “Ek baar maine jo commitment kar di, phir main apni bhi nahin sunta”. But, like Aamir, Sallu does get to flaunt his rippling muscles, his biceps, triceps, abs, and what not (including the glint of his Vicco-vajradanti teeth), in a series of bone-breaking, jaw-crushing, blood-spluttering fights that makes you feel he’s the ‘last action hero’ that sadly came too late in the day.

Salman Khan, the darling of masses, plays to the gallery in Wanted. To an extent, the movie is a showcase of Salman’s looks, his brawny bod, his dance moves and his overall personality, save his acting. And the star, whose career obit has already been penned and will now be edited by his detractors, manages to pull it off with the flamboyance that will get wolf whistles and catty squeals from his loyal fans. Ceetee!!!

A remake of the South hit Pokkiri, ‘Wanted’ tells the story of a sharpshooter and serial bone-breaker named Radhe (Salman Khan), the man who shoots his gun and pumps bullets into his rivals as if he was forwarding an SMS joke to a pal. Cold blooded and only loyal to those who offer him the most wads of money, Radhe switches sides from one gang to another and makes his entry into the gang of Gani Bhai (Prakash Raj), the dreaded gangster on the most wanted list of Mumbai police.

The handsome killer loses his heart to a cute call-centre employee Jhanvi (Ayesha Takia) at first sight. When Radhe saves her from the frisky hands of a corrupt and testosterone-driven cop Talpade (Mahesh Manjrekar), Jhanvi too feels her heart beat and soon is in love with Radhe.

Even as the duo’s love story keeps hitting speed bumps, Radhe is sucked inside a deadly gang war.

Be ready for a twist in the second half that might hit you harder than Salman’s punches hit the baddies.

It’s strongly advisable to rest and resign your thinking faculties while watching ‘Wanted’. Alone, Salman bashes up a dozen goons blue and black in his intro scene and in the next scene is shaking his leg with the likes of Anil Kapoor, Govinda and Prabhu Deva (who pop out of nowhere for this cameo) in a Ganpati song. More than once in the film, a romantic song or a club number is thrown in at the oddest of places. The most bizarre is the end, when Salman walks into the den of the Mafioso Gani Bhai and goes bang, bang, bang, and shoots down everyone without getting as much as a scratch on his shirtless body (yes, Sallu doffs it again).

But then, given that ‘Wanted’ is no cerebral challenge to its viewers, but just a harmless, full-on masala entertainer, a viewer can flush these flaws down with cola and corns.

‘Wanted’ rests on the strong muscles of Salman and powerful performances by Prakash Raj and Mahesh Manjrekar. Ayesha Takia is a treat to the eyes and she can act as well (a combination hard to find). Vinod Khanna is wasted in the most shoddily written role in the film. In fact, some of the dialogues in the film leave you cringing. Sample this - Salman takes on a bunch of goons single-handedly and says “Sooar (pigs) jhund mein ghoomte hain, par sher ekele shikar karta hai.”

Thankfully, director Prabhu Deva sprinkles ‘Wanted’ with regular doses of humour to keep the violence-filled movie light-hearted. Even until the very end when Sallu shoots his last bullet, there’s some silly laughter to be had.

So even though the film is senselessly violent at times, you’ll find some fun in the edgeways.

A star-spangled film that starts off well, builds the plot nicely, but goes completely hay wire in the second half, New York is long, tiresome, but well intentioned.

It opens with the distinctly unique skyline of New York, with the twin towers ominously missing. The SWAT team sweats overtime to round off a terror suspect, Omar ( Neil Nitin Mukesh ), who finds himself in the FBI net after arms and ammunition is found from the trunk of a car owned by him. FBI agent Roshan ( Irrfan Khan ) grills Omar and wrings out all info about Sam ( John Abraham ), Omar’s friend, who the FBI agent claims, is running a sleeper terrorist cell that could strike America anytime.

As Omar narrates the story of his friendship and unrequited love with Sam and Maya ( Katrina Kaif ) we are flashbacked to the year 1999 and on to the campus of New York State University where the three friends (studying god knows what!) bond over chess and American football. They seem like the happiest bunch of buddies in the world until the clock ticks to that fateful day, 9/11, 2001, when, just like the twin towers of WTC, their world comes crashing down.

Back to the present, Roshan, the FBI agent, convinces Omar to go back to Sam and Maya – who are now married and have a cute, long-haired kid – and infiltrate Sam’s sleeper cell as an undercover FBI operative.

Omar, who is sure that his friend Sam could never be a terrorist, takes up the offer, not so much to expose Sam’s truth but prove his (Sam’s) innocence. Little did he realize that his buddy Sam or Sameer Sheikh has a past he doesn’t know of!

From then on, director Kabir Khan tries to delineate the insidious process of the making of a terrorist – how a security-obsessed nation, in its bid to prevent terrorism, ends up creating new terrorists. Alongside it unravels the dilemma of Omar who can’t betray his friend but is willy-nilly drawn to prevent him from committing any terrorist act.

It all boils down to a climax so shoddily imagined and executed that you cease to relate to any of the characters. And the end, which should have ideally given you goose bumps only leaves you itching to get out of the theatre, the heat outside notwithstanding.

Irrfan Khan and Neil Nitin Mukesh are the two towers of ‘New York’. Irrfan, despite being given a few preachy sequences (in which he talks about introspection within the Muslim community and also the new America which is more accepting) lives up to his mettle, while Neil holds the film together with an earnest and sincere performance punctuated with flashes of brilliance.

It’s John, all butt and biceps, who’s the weak link. I know girls love him but John fails to internalize his character of a seething, simmering man who’s been done wrong. Katrina Kaif takes a leap from being all beauty and no talent. Now, she can cry convincingly. A special mention must be made of actor Nawazuddin who plays John’s assistant named Zilgai, an emotional wreck haunted by the torture he underwent under police detention.

Its flaws apart, ‘New York’ does have some very nicely executed sequences. One such is when Zilgai is cornered by cops atop the terrace of a high rise and decides to jump to death. In his final moment as he remembers his god, the last thing he sees is a church in a distance. Or that sequence when John goes to the downtown Brooklyn market with a codeword to contact a sleeper cell. The torture sequences (filmed on a nude John) are more shocking because of their content than execution.

The film’s music is pretty good and unlike other Bollywood flicks it doesn’t impede the story’s progression. The cinematography is nice but the director overdoes the slow-motion shots.

Saddled with a plot-holed script and poor performances from half of its starcast, ‘New York’ falls short of expectations. Watch it if you have three hours to kill.

Nothing is more frustrating than being stuck on 99, where only one run can bring you glory or the lack of it can make all your hard work seem like a waste. The Laurel and Hardy of this Friday’s release 99 are stuck in a similar situation. The world is their playing field, and con is their game.

The year is 1999. Sachin ( Kunal Khemu ) and Zaramud ( Cyrus Broacha ) are the Laurel and Hardy of our story. They make fake SIM cards and are sucked into a bigger mess when they steal and crash a gangster’s Mercedes while running away from cops. To save their skin, the duo are forced to work for the ganglord AGM ( Mahesh Manjrekar ), who is a bookie and has a long list of people to recover his money from. In the list is Rahul ( Boman Irani ), a gambling addict always looking for ‘signs’ and ‘signals’ as favourable or unfavourable omens to bet or gamble his money, if he has any.

sends Laurel and Hardy to Delhi to recover money from Rahul. Before the duo go about their dirty job, Laurel loses his heart to Pooja ( Soha Ali Khan ). Not just this, the two crooks also end up losing the money they forcibly recover from Rahul. Thereafter, begins a mad chase, where Laurel faces robust goons with fists and kicks, while the barrel of a Hardy spends most of his time in toilet, unloading himself of the butter chicken of previous night.

The director duo of Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. must be lauded for making a refreshingly delightful film with ample funny moments. The humour in the film – expressed in situations and crispy dialogues – is not of the kind we see in typical Bollywood no-brainers. At times it’s witty, at times pure slapstick. Note that sequence about Delhi being a strange city where girls are either named Pooja or Neha, where it’s cold in March, where spoiled brats play loud music in cars, and where everyone is out to steal your stuff. All these things actually transpire in the unraveling of the plot.

Though the pace of the film slackens at few places, the performances by the cast keeps you hooked for most part of the film. Kunal Khemu is totally at ease playing his character while Cyrus Broacha goes over the top a few times. Boman Irani gets the meatiest role in the film and he slips convincingly into his character of an employee in a forex firm whose wife has left him because of his gambling addiction. Soha Ali Khan has a brief role and she plays it well. Mahesh Manjrekar is a delight to watch.

The most surprising of the lot is an actor named Amit Mistry who plays a pint-sized goon out to recover his money from Rahul. There’s also an impactful cameo by Vinod Khanna , as a cricket match fixer.

The film’s music and cinematography are top grade and not once do they hamper the story’s flow.

With its tight script, fine performances and refreshingly different story, ‘99’ turns out to be a total paisa vasool film not just for its characters but also for audiences.

Do give it a shot.

Shocking, disturbing and thought-provoking, Nandita Das’s movie Firaaq touches a raw nerve.

Admittedly a work of fiction claimed to be inspired from thousands of true stories, ‘Firaaq’ (meaning quest, or separation) mirrors the gruesome reality of the Gujarat riots in which many Muslims and Hindus were slaughtered.

‘Firaaq’

provides us a peek into the after effects of the riots by taking us into the minds of the characters that populate its parallel stories. The gravity of the subject is established in the opening reel when a truckload of dead bodies are dumped into a mass grave.

A homeless boy Mohsin wanders the streets in search of his Abu. A middle-class housewife Aarti ( Deepti Naval ) battles her guilt of having shut the door on a desperate Muslim woman pleading for life. A Muslim-Hindu couple, Sameer and Anu, ( Sanjay Suri and Tisca Chopra ) grapple with the altered reality of their surroundings and plan to leave the city. A group of Muslim men gang up to take revenge. An ageing musician Khan Saheb ( Naseeruddin Shah ) is unable to comprehend the senseless violence and massacre. Two sahelis, Munira and Jyoti ( Shahana Goswami and Amruta Subhash) manage to stick together in the environment of communal hate and suspicion.

With calculated restraint, sensitivity and subtlety, ‘Firaaq’ tells the story of these characters in a bid to rattle the conscience of the viewers and make them realize the horrendous crimes that took place in the Gujarat of 2002.

However, it needs to be said that some might find the film one-sided because it repeatedly portrays the victimization of Muslims – be it a cop telling a Sameer Shaikh (Sanjay Suri) to buzz off to Pakistan, or a local resident dropping a heavy stone slab on a man’s head just because he is a Muslim.

But all in all, Nandita Das does a fairly decent job of telling a multi-layered story with seamless clarity. The performances are top notch, particularly by Deepti Naval, Shahana Goswami, Naseeruddin Shah and Paresh Rawal , who plays a middle-class, anti-Muslim Gujarati trying to cover up the rape committed by his young brother.

Looking beyond the film’s theme, ‘Firaaq’ is a cinematic gem with excellent cinematography (Ravi Chandran), well-penned screenplay (Nandita and Shuchi Kothari) and evocative background score.

Despite its somewhat narrow perspective, it’s a film made with conscience and noble intention, as reflected in a scene in which Raghuvir Yadav (a domestic help) tells Naseer that Muslims are being killed. Naseer replies: “Insaan Insaan ko maar raha hai, gham toh iss baat ka hai. A statement that entreats us to see humans beyond their religions, it pretty much encapsulates the soul of ‘Firaaq’.

Definitely worth a watch.

Stories about a simple man’s anger and outburst against the corrupt, corroding system have been seen and forgotten by the dozen, and Anurag Kashyap’s angst-ridden Gulaal turns out to be just a statistical addition to the list.

True, the movie is hard-hitting and a telling statement on the degeneration in the political structure both at the micro level of student politics and the macro level of power-hungry, tyrannical megalomaniacs who stop at nothing to realize their political ambitions. It starts off pretty well as Anurag Kashyap introduces the characters, and it develops momentum as the murky motives are unveiled. The movie, however, becomes a hodgepodge in the second half as it climaxes to a blood curdling crescendo all because of a one-sided love story gone horribly wrong.
Dilip

Singh ( Raj Singh Chaudhary ), a simple, soft-spoken nerd comes to Rajasthan to study law but gets unwittingly sucked into the vortex of student politics after his roommate Rananjay (Abhimanyu Singh), a candidate contesting college elections, is bumped off.

Dukey Bana ( Kay Kay Menon ), an influential figure who dreams of wedging out a splinter Rajputana state, takes Dilip under his wing and makes him win the post of General Secretary through rigged elections.

Dilip’s rival in the elections, Kiran (Ayesha Mohan), and her cunning brother (Aditya Shrivastava) are unable to digest their defeat. Kiran lures Dilip with love and sex. And he – like any able man in his right senses – succumbs to the temptation. But gradually the dirty, murky political game is revealed to Dilip as he finds Kiran take over political powers from him and dump him and move on to play her amorous tricks on the bigger shark – Dukey Bana.

Hell hath no fury like a lover scorned. Dilip, the simple, gullible, bespectacled wimp who was ragged into spending days naked inside a room with a female professor ( Jesse Randhawa ) when he joined the college, now takes to the gun after realizing that he’s been used as just a pawn in the bigger game.

‘Gulaal’ is essentially a character driven story that seems to get too verbose at places. The dialogues are expectedly sprinkled with expletives because the director apparently wanted them to sound ‘real’. The cinematography by Rajeev Ravi is superb. Music and lyrics by Piyush Mishra are intriguing.

If there’s anything truly worth watching in ‘Gulaal’ it’s the performances by the ensemble of talented actors from Kay Kay Menon as the devious Dukey Bana to Deepak Dobriyal as his assistant or Mahi Gill as his mistress.

Newcomer Raj Singh Chaudhary has an unassuming persona and convincingly portrays the inner transformation of his character. Ayesha Mohan and Aditya Shrivastava as the brother sister duo are terrific in their individual performances.

All said, ‘Gulaal’ is a seething, simmering, but tortuously predictable tale of all that’s rotten in the system. All through the movie you get an uncanny feeling that the director has pooled all his anger, angst and cynicism against the system and spewed it on the screen to be smacked at the faces of hapless viewers in the form of ‘Gulaal’.

Frankly, there’re better things to do with your time and money than have a taste of someone else’s angst.

Dressed in a black bandhgala (a traditional Indian outfit), Rahman even cracked a popular dialogue from Hindi films – ‘Mere Paas Maa Hai’ – (I have mother) to thank his mother and quipped a quick thanks to God in Tamil.

Then he dashed backstage and re-appeared moments later to perform his songs ‘O Saya’ and
‘Jai Ho’ with a troupe of dancers. Rahman himself sang the numbers and left the audiences
thrilled with his scintillating performance.

As the double treat, his won his second Oscar of the night for “Jai Ho” that has lyrics by
Gulzar .

In his acceptance speech, Rahman thanked his entire crew and added in the end: “In my life I have had to choose between love and hate. I chose love and I am here today.”

The whole Kodak Theatre reverberated with applause.
Back home in India, a billion hearts erupted with joy.
“Jai Ho,” Rahman.

The first part of the movie was a little over the top in some comic scenes and a bit of a

drag. The movie moved to a tolerable status just before the intermission and onwards.

It started with a cheeky letter asking for a loan. Whether Billu was just a simple man or a

smart alec wasn’t clearly defined. After all the characters in the village Budhbudhe were

introduced it too abruptly shifted to some spaceship kinda setting and SRK was introduced as

the star Sahir Khan with an item number one.

Billu (Irrfan Khan) is a hairdresser (trying to be politically correct) in the sleepy

village Budhbudhe. His business is in a bad state owing to the entry of Modern Madan. He is

the butt of all jokes, his wife (Lara Dutta) is dissatisfied and the kids have a smart

mouth. But life goes on until Sahir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) and his entourage comes to the

village for a shoot.

Don’t understand why the people greet the movie star by throwing papers at him and was

surprised to see that the roads in the village were so much better and nicely tarred than

the ones here in the city.

News spreads that Sahir (who wears really flashy jackets) is Billu’s buddy and he is put on

a pedestal and when his attempts at meeting with Sahir goes nowhere, he is derided. Then we

have the men crying - Billu for the humiliation and Sahir reminiscing about his good old

friend.

Then Billu goes back on the pedestal yet again and both friends have a very emotional

reunion. Bring out the hankies!!

SRK goes one step further and takes a dig at the whole Khan wars when pushed by the

obnoxious Dubeyji.

It’s an okay watch if you have some company and food at hand as the movie doesn’t really

absorb you too deeply.

Toast to this new age Dev. D , folks! For it makes the pitiable protagonist of Sarat
Chandra’s ‘Devdas’ somewhat likeable.
It never ceases to amaze me that Devdas has caught the fancy of so many filmmakers. A loser in love who drinks himself to destruction hardly makes an appealing figure to me. What rather evokes interest is this drunkard’s journey through the two women in his life – Paro and Chandramukhi.

who makes the ultimate compromise and, so to speak, “moves on with life”, is the image of a

woman resigned to her fate. Chandramukhi, the courtesan who keeps pain hidden beneath her

smiles, is the image of a woman who loves her man but won’t tie him down. It’s not

incidental that this platonic quality is to be found in a character that’s intrinsically

sensual. In these intriguing personas does the appeal of Sarat Chandra’s story truly lies,

and not in its dumped, drunken and drugged Devdas.

But in ‘Dev D’, Anurag Kashyap gives Devdas a new spin. The director improvises upon Sarat

Chandra’s work by not just giving the story a modern setting but also by taking liberties –

adding his own interpretations or perspective in the edgeways, plucking out real scandals

from newspaper headlines and planting them seamlessly into the plot and, above all, choosing

an optimistic ending. For, at the end of the bottle, there ought to be hope and not death.

The strength of ‘Dev D’ lies in Kashyap’s telling. He doesn’t sweep the sexual attraction

between Dev and Paro under the carpet. So here we have Paro ( Mahi Gill ) clicking her own

topless picture and mailing it to Dev ( Abhay Deol ) who, right after seeing it, overcomes

his indecision of returning back from London to Punjab to his childhood crush. In ‘Dev D’,

it’s the egos of Dev and Paro, and not solely the misunderstanding between the two, that

spell doom for their love. And better fleshed out than Paro’s is Chanda’s character ( Kalki

Koechlin ). A school girl who becomes an embarrassment for her parents after an MMS sex

scandal, she takes to the life of a prostitute who eventually falls in love with a man

drowning his pain in Vodka.

From the mustard fields of Punjab to dingy rooms of Pahar Ganj unravels the story of the

self-destructive hero who re-discovers love after hitting the rock bottom of his life.

Kashyap deserves a toast for brewing an old wine masterfully in new bottle. But what ‘Dev D’

lacks is emotional appeal. It is too much of head and too little of heart. Save for a

touching moment when Chanda asks Dev if he still loves Paro, there’s hardly anything that

tugs at your heart. And that’s the most notable shortcoming of ‘Dev D’. It tells an

emotional story intellectually.

Performances in the film are top notch. Abhay Deol is turning out to be quite a revelation.

He hardly hams or overacts. Nor is he as muted and underplayed as he otherwise is. His is a

balanced performance. Mahi Gill has the intoxicating eyes that can make a guy kick the

bottle. On top of it, she acts wonderfully. Kalki does impressively fine for a newcomer.

With its crispy, witty and straight-out-of-life dialogues, ‘Dev D’ gives a new hue and tone

to ‘Devdas’. And the dozen or more songs that play out in the background during the course

of the film give ‘Dev D’ the feel of a musical. The cinematography is mind boggling at

times. The music is catchy. Alas, if only the film worked on your heart as much as it does

on your head. But then, it’s far from being the emotional atyachar that No Smoking was.

If you can digest an overdose of physical violence, then Ghajini is a film you shouldn’t miss for Aamir Khan’s unforgettable performance.

It’s been years since I saw a Hindi film that had so few dialogues for the leading man. Quite unlikely for a masala movie about romance and revenge! Stoically, Aamir Khan walks and rips through the film with the charm of a Casanova and the beastliness of a vengeful man, and delivers a performance that will be remembered even though the movie itself may be forgotten after a few months.
‘Ghajini’

is a film that ought to be seen for the sheer novelty of its theme. Inspired – and to some extent, lifted – from Hollywood’s ‘Memento’, it tells the story of a man who can’t remember anything beyond 15 minutes. He suffers from short term memory loss. But somehow he has found ways to remind himself of just one thing – that he has to find and kill the man whose name his murdered lover ( Asin ) whispered in his ear just moments before he too was hit on the head with an iron rod, never to fully recover his memory again. So, through tattoos and polaroids and notes he keeps reminding himself of just one aim – to find Ghajini, the killer whose face and whereabouts he neither knows, nor can remember.

As our amnesiac hero, Sanjay Singhania (Aamir), closes in on Ghajini and goes about bumping off one bad guy after another, we are given repeated flashbacks into his past life, when he fell in love with a struggling model Kalpana (Asin), an Indianized version of the French ‘Amelie’ who helps the poor and needy on the streets. It is this very quality of Kalpana that makes her the target of a gangster, who hunts her down and kills her.

Now, Sanjay, with his limited memory and eight pack abs, lives for one purpose – revenge. He is like a loose canon, a self-propelled torpedo that keeps veering off the course and leaves behind a trail of broken bones, wrung necks and pummeled jaws wherever he passes through.

And oh! I almost forgot. There’s also Sunita ( Jiah Khan ), a medical student interested in the case study of our amnesiac hero. She’s a frail collegian who hinders and helps Sanjay in his mission.

Director A.R. Murugadoss tells a long story at a brisk pace and shows no frugality in depicting violence in all its goriness. It is blood curdling stuff gruesomely glorified. Stuff that gives you the heebie-jeebies! It’s mostly hand-to-hand combat with frequent use of iron rods that serve the sole purpose as skull-crushers. Repulsive!

But if you have stomach for such revolting violence, you would enjoy sitting through ‘Ghajini’ for many reasons. First, it’s unique plot. Second, Aamir’s mind-blowing acting. Third, Asin’s confident debut in a heart-winning performance. Jiah Khan is appropriately cast in a role that doesn’t demand much from her. Pradeep Rawat, as the antagonist, is menacing.

There is a gaping hole that yawns right at the very base of Ghajini’s story. If a man can’t remember that his lover was killed or who killed her, why does he need to remind himself again and again to take revenge. Wouldn’t his vengeance wane away with his memory? Murugadoss should have established some internal link that keeps pushing the protagonist back to his mission – something like sporadic dreams or memory flashes.

Anyway, realism is something you shouldn’t expect from ‘Ghajini’. It’s a full-on masala film that is stylishly shot and has above average music by A R Rahman . It’s a film that needs to be enjoyed with mouthful of cola and fistful of popcorns even though the no-holds-barred violence keeps getting on your nerves. Despite its long duration of three-plus hours, the movie, with its quick pace, doesn’t weigh heavy, and leaves you with a mind out of time. Anterograde Amnesia, anyone?

It is Shahrukh Khan who lights up your life with his superb performance even though Aditya Chopra makes a mess of the heart-winning love story with an overdose of weepy melodrama in the second half of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi .

Friends! The director who made arguably the best Bollywood love story of the 90s ( Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge ) returns a slightly evolved filmmaker with realistic sensibilities that reek of Shimit Amin’s style in Chak De India , but not without the baggage of weepy sentimentality that has by now become synonymous with the Yashraj stamp. ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ is a love story you almost want to believe in. And you do believe it until the film runs past the half-way mark, when the director tries to repeatedly unleash one tear-jerking moment after another on the popcorn munching audiences, thus robbing the story of its credulity.
Much has changed since Aditya Chopra had his last outing in Mohabbatein eight years ago. Today’s i-Pod generation doesn’t have much appetite for the drama that once got the kerchiefs out. Now, it only gets the i-Pods out. Before the final fifteen minutes of the film, the love story nosedives into regression and you are told that lovers have begun to see ‘Rab’ (no less) in each other. Why Aditya? Is love any less if you don’t? Can’t one see the lover as who he or she is?
But many thanks to Shahrukh (with due apologies to the staunch SRK¬ bashers) for holding the film together without overacting his part. This is perhaps the best performance by the superstar yet.

Surinder Sahni (Shahrukh) returns to his town Amritsar with a reluctant bride Taani ( Anushka Sharma ). She was set to marry another man who died in an accident on the day of the wedding and a twist of events made her take saat phere with Surinder instead.

The two make an odd match. She is a good-looking Punjabi kudi with suppressed jubilance, and he – in his full sleeve shirts and loose pants over sports shoes – is as ordinary and clumsy as a man could be. Even though Surinder loves her, he doesn’t express it to Taani, hoping that haule haule she would begin to love him. But that day doesn’t come, and Surinder decides to transform himself into the kind of man his lonely wife would admire – a hip dude in narrow-fit jeans, studded boots and ragged tee-hee shirts.

In his new avatar as Raj, he becomes Taani’s dance partner in a competition. And even as he makes her laugh and relive life, she doesn’t realize that Raj is the same ordinary man she makes toasts for every morning. So the irony of this love story is that the more Taani is drawn towards Raj, the more Surinder loses her. And Surinder cannot be Raj forever.
To be fair to the director, he has penned a nice story with some fine dialogues and situations that keep a perpetual smile on your face. The meek and submissive protagonist (played brilliantly by SRK) may be the story’s underdog, but your heart goes out for him. He is a man who amuses you with his ordinariness. And he evokes sympathy (not the pitiful kind) when you see him locked in a losing battle with his other fictitious half in winning over his wife’s love.
If only Aditya Chopra had restrained himself and not stretched the drama to the point when it begins to weigh heavy.

SRK is the pivot on which the whole movie rests, and he rocks ‘Rab’ despite his facial lines that make him look a tad mature to romance a 20-something damsel. The body language, the mannerisms and the expressions he lends to his nerdy Surinder is the stuff you see from polished actors. Anushka has a few rough edges in her acting but considering it’s her debut, she does pretty well. Vinay Pathak – the only third character in the story – plays Surinder’s gaudily dressed buddy who runs a hair salon and advices him on how to be “macho”. This is perhaps the first time Pathak has played such a flashy character and he does it extremely fine.
Despite its average music and post interval bumps, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ is eminently entertaining. There’s also a surprise medley of old Hindi film songs picturized on SRK and a bunch of beauties like Kajol , Bipasha Basu , Lara Dutta , Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee in glamourous cameos. The best part of the film is the finale of the dance competition and also the closing credits that send you home smiling ear-to-ear.

For a such touching moments as these in the film and for SRK’s stellar performance, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ is definitely worth a watch.

Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Fashion’ is a nice but overlong movie that could do with some snipping.

Running at the length of 17 long reels, the movie tells an unending human tale of ambition, success, degradation and re-emergence set against the backdrop of the fashion industry. At the centre of the story is Meghna Mathur ( Priyanka Chopra ) who comes to Mumbai to become a “supermodel”, against the wishes her father in Chandigarh.

From the moment she sets her foot in the glam world, Meghna is exposed to the superficialities and ugly realities of the glam world of appearances. It’s a world where men are fashionably gay and women are used as “eye candy” in elite parties. On her way up the ladder, Meghna has to make many compromises. She has to pose in lingerie just to get her portfolio made. She has to put her work above her personal life to climb the ladder of success.

As Meghna gets sucked into the world of fashion, she becomes a victim of her own success. She loses her boyfriend Maanav ( Arjan Bajwa ), a struggling model who opened his doors to her when she had nowhere to go. She loses her good friend Janet ( Mugdha Godse ) whom she befriended as a struggler. And, above all, she loses her self-respect and her confidence after being used and dumped by the modeling agency Panache and its owner ( Arbaaz Khan ).

Parallel to Meghna’s story is the brief tale of Shonali ( Kangana Ranaut ), a cocaine-snorting, cranky, lanky model who is a show-stopper at fashion shows. Like Meghna, Shonali, too, has been used and dumped by the glam world. The only difference is that Meghna bounces back after hitting the rock bottom, while Shonali bites the dust.

‘Fashion’ starts off pretty well as a viewer is introduced to the fashiondom with its pansy men and plastic-smile women. But the movie begins to drag in the second half, with Meghna’s downfall. It becomes too grim, too somber. And it drags on and on.

Haute Torture?

The movie overstays its welcome but ends on a high note, with some drama thrown in.

Madhur Bhandarkar indulges in a lot of clichés (like gay designers and exploiting bosses) but perhaps they could not have been avoided. After all, clichés they may be, they reflect the truth. Trouble starts when Madhur’s passion with his subjects begins to supersede their relevance to the story. That’s where ‘Fashion’ becomes heavy, tiring and exhausting experience.

Priyanka Chopra is an actress who doesn’t have any definitive style to her acting but she is the soul of ‘Fashion’. She is an under-confident, middle-class girl at the beginning of the story and transforms into an arrogant model full of attitude in the second half before almost turning into a zombie with her fall from fame. Kangana Ranaut actually has a natural knack for playing the proverbial ‘girl interrupted’. She excels in the role of a disturbed model who eventually loses her mental balance.

On the sidelines, Arbaaz Khan is mechanical, while Arjan Bajwa is pretty good in his performance. Mugdha Godse doesn’t have much acting range. Kitu Gidwani is okay.

While ‘Fashion’ ends up testing your patience, it does have many things going for it. For instance, the styling of the actors done by Narendra Kumar, Rita Dhody and Rick Roy. The songs in the film are woven seamlessly into the plot and it is here some filmmakers in apna Bollywood can learn from Madhur. But Madhur ought to have been more controlled, restrained and less indulgent in the subject. Had he done that, ‘Fashion’ might have been a gripping film right to its conclusion.

Three guys lying on top of each other in a position that would make you think that they are about to ‘ding dong’. Or imagine this. A guy falling through the air lands on his crotch on a pointed rock. Ouch!! That’s the kind of humour Golmaal Returns offers.

That this comedy film by Rohit Shetty is a no-brainer goes without saying. It’s a film that suspends reason and wit for juvenile humour. It has plenty of gags stitched one after the other in its threadbare script, but many of these gags are utterly lame. Like, what would be Lara Dutta’s name if she marries Brian Lara? Lara Lara. Hey! You’re supposed to laugh here. Ain’t that so funny?

The film hardly has a story to write about. Gopal ( Ajay Devgan ) has an over-suspicious wife Ekta ( Kareena Kapoor ) who’s hooked to the Balaji teleserials. One night when Gopal is unable to reach home after saving a girl ( Celina Jaitley ) from a bunch of goons, Ekta demands an explanation. Knowing his wife’s suspicious nature, Gopal tells her a lie that he was with his friend named Anthony Gonsalves. But Ekta is adamant. She writes to Anthony and asks to meet him to cross-check if Gopal is telling the truth.

To hide his lie, Gopal makes his junior Laxman ( Shreyas Talpade ) pretend as Anthony. Gopal also takes Ekta’s mute brother Lucky ( Tusshar Kapoor ) into confidence. Together the trio of Gopal, Lucky and Laxman fool Ekta into believing in Gopal’s lie. But their bluff is called when the real Anthony Gonsalves shows up.

To make things worse, enters inspector Madhav ( Arshad Warsi ) who is investigating a murder that happened on the night Gopal stayed out of his home. Now, Madhav is a cop who loves Gopal’s sister Esha ( Amrita Arora ), but he can’t stand the sight of Gopal.

As Gopal invents one lie after another, the story goes through a series of crazy and silly situations before culminating in an over-the-top climax.

Rohit Shetty’s main motto is to make the audiences laugh at any cost, and he does try sincerely. The only trouble is that some of the jokes are so slapstick and crass that you don’t find them funny at all. Like the scene in which Vrajesh Hirjee (the karate man with a cobra tattooed on his belly) is tortured by electric shock in a pool of water and is tossed scores of feet in the air whenever his tormentor dips the electrocuted wire in the water. The movie also takes repeated digs at Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his films Black and Sawariya . But none of it is really hilarious.

The funny moments in the film come from Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi and Shreyas Talpade. Ajay Devgan chips in a bit of his own style of humour but he is certainly outshone by others. Kareena is charming in a light-hearted role. Celina Jaitley doesn’t do what she is best at but still catches your eye. Amrita Arora and Anjana Sukhani hardly have a role.

To sum it up, ‘Golmaal Returns’ is a kind of film you would enjoy if you have a taste for silly humour. But if you don’t, then this movie is a waste of your precious bucks. Yuck! Back Luck! What the f…!

Madhur Bhandarkar’s movie ‘Fashion’ chronicles a tale that brings to light the hitherto

unseen shades of the fashion world. The film is about the rise and fall of a supermodel, and

her subsequent resurrection.

The movie stars Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, Mugdha Godse, Arjan Bajwa, Arbaaz Khan,

Synopsis

Set against the glittering backdrop of the glamorous but ruthless world of haute couture,

Meghna Mathur knew that she was meant to be famous. Ever ambitious and bright with stars in

her eyes, even as a girl with a conservative background, she dared to dream of bright lights

and the big city. The world of fashion - the clothes, the colors, the make-up, all of these

form a part of the fascinating world that Meghna has longed to be a part of.

She reaches the peak of her success and rises to walk the ramps for leading designers across

India.

The fashion world lies at her feet - the parties, the brand endorsements, the

photographers, the models, the romance and of course - the shows, the shows, the shows!

However, karma catches up with Meghna as she slowly starts to pay the price for her fame and

her journey to the top. Her attempt at a comeback was going to be a near impossibility but

Synopsis

It's all happening in the Beach Party Capitol of the world...Miami.

When Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal (John Abraham) are turned down for an apartment

Neha (Priyanka Chopra) they go to plan 'G' - they pretend to be 'Gay' to secure the

apartment.

All is well till they meet the sexy siren Neha and thus begins a journey of fun frolic and a

test of friendship like never before.

When Neha's boss Abhimanyu (Bobby Deol) enters the fray as the third contender for her

seen jiving along with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham on the Miami Beach.

The movie has music by Vishal-Shekhar and lyrics by Anvita Dutt Guptan, Vishal Dadlani and

Kumaar.

The costumes for John and Abhishek are done by Aki Narula , while Manish Malhotra has done

costumes for Priyanka Chopra.

One Night @ Call Centre by Chetan Bhagat is an interesting read with every character well defined by the author. It begins with the author meeting a co-passenger in his train compartment, builds up with the six main characters in the call centre and dwells well on Bakshi, the man in charge of Connexions, the Call Centre the six are working in. It then moves on to the all-important call from God and His conversation with them especially regarding Bakshi, which makes them sit up and take notice and turn things around in their favour.

It's extremely difficult for someone who has read a book and then to see a movie made on it to relate to it. Every time, as a viewer, you will be trying to picture in your mind's eye what you interpreted of the novel. In that respect, it's not always going to be 'up there'. However, where justice can be made, it has to. Like for instance, the character of Bakshi is half baked. This when you have a tight script in your hand is not acceptable. I mean, when you read the novel you want to wring Bakshi's neck with your bare hands. That's the same feeling that goes through Shyam and Vroom's mind in the book. But Bakshi's shortcoming, coupled with his 'diplomatic' bullying tactics, especially towards Shyam, who is never able to say no, is missing. The whole concept of showing Shyam as a 'soft man' never able to stand up to his bad boss is lost.

Also, the way they are all placed at the Call Centre with their desks is debatable. And there are many instances when the scene just takes off. Like when Radhika says she misses her husband, Vroom dials her husband's mobile number. Wherein, in the book, it's brilliantly built up where Vroom asks Radhika if she wants to play "Radio Jockey". In the book, Vroom explains what he means: "I call Anuj and pretend I am calling from a radio show. Then I tell him he has won a prize, a large bouquet of roses and a box of Swiss chocolates that he can send to anyone he loves, anywhere in India, with a loving message. So then, we all get to hear what romantic lines he says to you." A chance of a good scene is washed out here. As a reader, you are kicked in the gut when Anuj says he wants to send the flowers to his girlfriend Payal!

Also, there could have been some more fire in the lovemaking scene between Priyanka and Shyam. It comes off rather tame. The passion is missing. Then there is this scene when their car is hanging precariously on rods at a construction site and the call from God comes. There is this whole conversation that dwells on Bakshi, which explains their actions when they come back. But not in the movie. A viewer who has not read the book will wonder why they are getting even with Bakshi. Finally, there is this trick in MS Word with which they spread panic among the Americans to increase their call volumes. They tell the Americans that there is a virus in the computer and they need to spread the word around and keep calling at the Call Centre. According to Vroom (in the book) all you have to do is open a word file and type =rand (200,99) and press enter. As soon as that is done, you have hundred pages of text, which reads like this... The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog...

Director Atul Agnihotri has taken a few cinematic liberties, which is acceptable, but overall he falls short of rekindling the same sort of emotion that one goes through while reading the book.

To come back to the story, it's about one night in a Call Centre and what happens to the six friends who work there. There's Shyam (Sharman Joshi), Priyanka (Gul Panag), Vroom (Sohail Khan), Esha (Isha Koppikar), Radhika (Amrita Arora) and Milatary Uncle (Sharat Saxena). Then there's the big bad boss Bakshi (Dalip Tahil).

There's also Salman Khan to whom the story is being told to by Katrina Kaif.

All six actors do justice to their characters but it is only Gul who actually speaks in an Americanised accent that a Call Centre employee is supposed to speak in.

Katrina Kaif looks tired, sleepy and bored. Salman in the first part looks every bit the rock star he is portrayed.

I would say a decent attempt but could have been better considering the director had at his disposal a very good story and the services of the author himself.

Gentleladies and men. Please make way for our new local superhero – Indiana Drones. Mind you, he doesn’t embark on any trivial mission like the search for the Holy Grail. Drona fights to save nothing less than the entire srishti.

As you must have rightly guessed, director Goldie Behl lets his imagination run amok in Drona . He pieces together a visual spectacle full of mind-numbing special effects and a zillion poses of a sword-wielding Abhishek Bachchan trying hard to stand gracefully against the strong desert winds. And that’s pretty much what ‘Drona’ is all about. Visuals, and visuals, and some more visuals. Story and script may go to hell. Or still better, to the asuras.

‘Drona’tells a tale of a clan of warriors who have been protecting the supreme secret of the elixir of life – the amrit that was churned out by the gods but has been sought by the asuras (demons) since forever. Drona is the title of the main person who guards the secret.

Now, cut to the present day Prague where Aditya lives a thankless existence until one day he – guided by a hovering rose petal – finds an ancient bracelet in his cupboard and puts it on. Coincidentally, a devious magician Riz Raizada ( Kay Kay Menon ) visits the city for his show and spots Aditya and recognizes him as a potential Drona, the only person who knows (or could know) the secret place where the amrit is hidden.

You see, Riz is the modern asura who wants to be immortal by gulping down the holy amrit. And Drona is the man who possesses its secret.

Before Aditya can figure out why the heck this queer-looking magician is so interested in him (pun unintended), enters Sonia ( Priyanka Chopra ) who kicks a few butts and protects Aditya from the magician’s men. Aditya is then told about his real identity – that he is the next Drona.

So, our superhero-in-waiting flies home to Pratapgarh to take charge of his duties as the protector of the pious secret. But the evil Riz catches up with him fast. What follows is a battle between Drona and Riz, the good and the evil. And you don’t have to be an Einstein to figure out who will win this battle.

Many things don’t click in ‘Drona’. For one, Abhishek Bachchan is a poor choice to play the title role. No doubt he can act, but he doesn’t have the body and its suppleness to play the part of a warrior. A Hrithik Roshan or Akshay Kumar might have done wonders to the role, while Abhishek looks stilted in his Drona suit and is visibly uptight when he wields the sword. His sword-to-sword combat with the magician in the end is without any spark.

Priyanka Chopra – playing Drona’s shadow and protector – looks fetching in her unique outfit with a special head-gear and foot-gear. Though her role doesn’t demand exceptional histrionics, she does look convincing doing the action scenes.

Kay Kay Menon makes a caricature out of his character with his over-the-top performance. This performance stands conspicuously low in the career of an otherwise superb actor. Jaya Bachchan has a small role and is reduced to a stone statue for the most part of the story.

Goldie Behl may have intended to make an interesting film for kids and adults, but he fails to give ‘Drona’ a right shape. He seems over-fixated to make the film visually spectacular. One special effect after another is hammered into your head as if the director wants to exhibit his skill and imagination, which, alas, is borrowed from a number of films from Spielberg’s ‘Indiana Jones’ to Zhang Yimou’s ‘Hero’.

Consequently, ‘Drona’ ends up a boring, botched-up, soulless film with below-average music and sub-standard performances.

Had it not been for Imran Khan , Sanjay Gadhvi’s movie Kidnap might have been a good nap.

Picking out plot-holes in this purported thriller can be a tedious job as tiring as a chubby Sanjay Dutt hopping across the roof-beams of an under-construction high-rise building in pursuit of his daughter’s kidnapper. Quite obviously, the lithe kidnapper slips out of his hands, just like the plot keeps slipping out of Gadhvi’s grip throughout the course of this strictly timepass film.

Theonly silver lining is Imran Khan, who, armed with his mysterious screen presence, holds you to your seat for most part of the film. But then, every silver lining has a dark cloud nearby.

The movie tells the story of a young, angst-filled man (Imran Khan) who kidnaps the daughter ( Minissha Lamba ) of a rich industrialist (Sanjay Dutt) to settle an old score. Instead of demanding a huge ransom, the kidnapper holds the businessman to ransom and plays a game with him. In the game, the kidnapper makes him do things like burgle a rival’s house, rescue a prisoner from a high-security jail, and even kill someone.

Now, there has to be a reason strong and sound enough for the kidnapper to make the businessman do such crazy things. When that subplot is revealed, the movie hits rock bottom and you somehow manage to stop yourself from pulling your hair. The subplot shows how Dutt had once wronged a teenaged boy. Without giving away the plot, I will safely add that it is so embarrassing to watch that you want to hurl your popcorn bucket to the screen, if only you hadn’t paid out of your own wallet for it.

Thriller is a genre that doesn’t allow room for much cinematic liberty. The script has to be taut and the plot must unfold in such a way that the viewer is able to piece together the jigsaw and connect the dots by the end. But what you come across in ‘Kidnap’ are a lot of missing pieces and loose ends.

Sanjay Gadhvi doesn’t rely so much on logic as on convenience. He shows the captive Minissha Lamba fashionably dressed in clothes so skimpy that they keep distracting the sullen kidnapper time and again. And as a viewer, you completely empathize with the lad. For, throughout her captivity, Minissha’s character is undeviatingly focused on her dresses, be them cleavage-flaunting gowns or hot pants with shimmering belly chains to boot.

Imran Khan holds the film together by rising above the shoddy script solely by dint of his performance. Though he doesn’t do anything stellar, there’s something about him that catches your eye whenever he is on the screen. Hot as a potato and cool as a cucumber, Imran walks through his role with menacing ease. Minissha performs well but her styling looks very odd on her character. Sanjay Dutt is okay as long as he doesn’t do action. There’s a scene in which he tells the kidnapper to go to hell, and his wife, Vidya Malvade , vents out her anger on Dutt. He turns to her and says: “you’re over-reacting”. He should’ve said “you’re over acting”.

‘Kidnap’ does have a few good sequences. The movie’s music is average and the item by Sophie Choudhary or the beach song by Minissha fails to lift your spirits.

What does kick the adrenaline is a superbly executed chase sequence in which Imran hops across buildings and climbs up scaffoldings like a monkey. For this sequence and for Imran’s performance, ‘Kidnap’ gets two stars.

A married man has to invent a lie for his suspicious wife to cover up the truth of a night he spent out. As the suspicious wife inspects into the matter, the husband has to invent new lies to cover up the old ones.

That’s what ‘Golmaal Returns’ promises – entertainment unadulterated.

The film is the much-awaited follow-up of the uproariously comic smash-hit Golmaal .

Gopal (Ajay Devgan) lives with his wife Ekta (Kareena Kapoor) who is fascinated by the saas bahu serials on television. She sees the world through the blinders of these cheesy soap operas.

Gopal’s sister Esha (Amrita Arora) has a boyfriend whom Gopal doesn’t like.

And who can forget Gopal’s dumb brother-in-law Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor) who speaks in a language that sounds like double entendres.

The story of ‘Golmaal Returns’ is set rolling when Gopal gets stuck in a yacht after saving an attractive woman Meera (Celina Jaitley) from some goons.

Both end up spending the night on the yacht and when he comes home the next day, his painfully suspicious wife Ekta smells fish.

Gopal knows it’s going to be hard to quell her suspicion so he concocts a cock-and-bull story about having stayed the night with a fictitious friend called Anthony Gonsalves.

Ekta refuses to buy his yarn and writes to Anthony (on a fictitious address given to her by Gopal) asking him to visit her.

Gopal convinces his junior at work, Laxman (Shreyas Talpade) to pretend to be Anthony. Everything goes according to plan till the address to which Ekta had written to Anthony turns out to be real!

If that isn’t complication enough for Gopal, a dead body is discovered at the location where he had saved Meera.

The Investigating Officer, Madhav (Arshad Warsi), who is Esha’s boyfriend and cannot stand the sight of Gopal, learns that the latter had been missing from home that eventful night and begins checking on him.

EMI (Easy Monthly Installment) is a bittersweet satire that looks at modern day India in a mirthfully subjective way.

‘Emi’ is an engaging pick on the easy-to-get but taxing-to-hold loans and credits. It’s a narrative of interconnecting characters coming from different strata and style.

Anil and Shilpa are a young couple in love. They are contemporary, hard working, ambitious and submerged in debts. They get married against their fears of compatibility, starting their life in a brand new house.

Love and desire see no boundaries as they choose to travel to the cheapest foreign location for their honey moon which comes at a small installment. Electronics, Car, & kitchenware add to their happy dreams in small steps of more installments. As the cost of love finds various expenses for a happy matrimony their world begins to crumble.

Ryan works as a DJ for survival but is a musician at heart. He is enamored by this beautiful, zippy and hot girl Nancy and immediately falls for her. After the early, hard to get part, she soon makes her way in his life.

Against all warnings about Nancy being a gold digger, Ryan takes the plunge. He believes he is invincible and cannot be taken for a ride. But sometimes life is not a big plan….

Prerna is a beautiful lady in her mid 30’s who is coming to terms with her husband’s accidental suicide, knows that life ahead will not be easy if she does not have her husband’s insurance money coming. Her biggest hurdle is to prove that her husband was murdered – to claim his insurance money.

Prerna is ready to bend the law and is determined to get the insurance money. Rafik powder, a goon comes to her rescue, and promise to do the job for 10% of the large insurance sum of 2 crores. Prerna strikes a deal with Rafik and pays him half the money by securing a loan, hoping the job will be done.

A year passes by. Anil and Shilpa are doing the rounds of family court trying to get a divorce. Ryan can’t believe Nancy has dumped him and is nursing his broken heart and a shattered ego. Prerna has been deceived by Rafik and now does not know what to do as she has made large claims of producing the killer of her husband in court.

Their lives are affected by one common problem, that of, accumulated debts which they are unable to pay. Sometimes problems find their own solutions and such a solution in their despaired, hysterical lives, is Sattar.

Early starter Sattar, a small time goon on the streets of Mumbai, slowly graduated to running an ethically unethical profession of debt retrievals. “Good Luck Recovery” is satirically India’s No.1 money-recovering agency due to lack of rivals in the profession.

Still in his late thirties, running a monopoly business, Sattar has it all – success, money, power – until recently when he starts nursing the mind for politics, which for him is the highest berth to reach.

Sattar comes in contact with Anil, Prerna and Ryan who have defaulted on their EMI’s and are now facing their biggest crises. Sattar's fresh inclination and his falling in love offers a few solutions, which help them move ahead in life and lets him recover the dues.

With his wit, experience and new desire he changes few lives including his own.

EMI is written and directed by Saurabh Kadra. It has music by Chirantan Bhatt. The film is set to release on October 29.

Pixar has taken animation to a whole new level with Wall-E. A few minutes into the movie and you quite forget that every frame portrays a make-believe world and that the cute wide-eyed lonely creature that's tugging at your heart is just a sketch!

The movie is set way into the future - at a time where humans have fled the earth and all that remains is gigantic piles of junk. And the only living thing on this deserted planet is a squat, droopy, binocular-eyed robot, Wall-E [with the voice of Benjamin Burtt]. He is the last of his kind. He and others like him were created and sent to earth on a clean up mission - to rid the earth of harmful pollutants. But over the years, the task grew insurmountable and soon his companions lost out. However, Wall-E is relentless. He goes about his job with a religious sincerity, hopeful that it will one day pay off.

And then one day Wall-E meets Eve [with the voice of Elissa Knight]. Years of living on earth has given the hard-working robot almost human emotions. Eve is a frictionless white pod with cathode-ray eyes who's been sent to earth to search for organic life. When the two meet, it's love at first sight! They don't talk, exactly, but they hold hands and burble each other's names - love transcends all barriers, doesn't it!

Wall-E is not all gloom. The movie touches every emotion. One moment you are dabbing a tissue at your eyes because he's moved you to tears, another moment you're repeating the action, but this time it's because you've laughed so hard! Wall-E is a lovely adventure on the surface, but a social satire when you delve deeper. It's the story of a robot that reminds humans there is much more to life than microchips and binary codes. Wall-E, with all its cuteness, humour and romance, is a bid to us humans to wake up and LIVE life, not just pass through it.

Synopsis

Faraway in a distant town, there was once a young man named Aditya. Brought up by a foster family, Aditya was unaware of his real identity and the destiny that awaited him.

Ever since he was a child, a recurring nightmare haunted him. And when he woke up in fright, there was no one he could ever hold on to except for a magical blue rose petal that came wafting in the wind, never failing to make him smile through his tears.

Somewhere far from here, an evil sorcerer, Riz Raizada, a descendant of the asuras (legendary demons), had become dangerously impatient in his thirst for the precious secret. The secret, which was the missing link, in his grand plan of taking over the universe. To get to the secret, he’d have to defeat Drona.

One day, Aditya and Riz came face to face and Riz immediately recognized him as the Drona. Aditya’s destiny had caught up with him and his life was about to take him on a journey he had never imagined.

Sonia, the leader of the cult, revealed Aditya’s real identity to him. Baffled, Aditya found it all too hard to believe.
Having no time to lose, Sonia decides to take Aditya back to his place of birth, the ancient kingdom of Pratapgarh, where his mother, Queen Jayati Devi would have all the answers to his questions. But before he could embrace his mother, Riz and his army of the darkest powers catch up with him.

Welcome to a new brand of Shyam Benegal cinema. The man who’s made some realistic, slice-of-life dramas, changes gears in Welcome To Sajjanpur and comes up with a frothy, humourous, dramatic and heart-winning story that reeks of apne des ki mitti.

No item girls here. No phoren locations. Just a small, dusty hamlet named Sajjanpur where an aspiring novelist Mahadev ( Shreyas Talpade ) makes his living by writing letters for the illiterate village folk. And what a splendid rustic lot they are!
There’s

a pretty young married thing ( Amrita Rao ) who’s waiting for her husband to return from the city. She also happens to be Mahadev’s childhood crush. So the charming letter-writer doesn’t mind a little bit of deceit and manipulation in winning her over.

There’s a superstitious mother ( Ila Arun ) who wants to get her manglik daughter ( Divya Dutta ) married. There’s a dreamy-eyed compounder (Ravi Kishen) in love with a widow ( Rajeshwari Sachdev ). There’s a eunuch contesting elections. And there’s a goon with political ambitions (quite naturally).

In such a colourful melee of characters unravels not just the story of coming of age of the protagonist, but also touching tales of each character. Some of these tales end on a tragic note, even though the film’s denouement is optimistic.

Ashok Mishra’s dialogues reek of rustic flavour and are laced with witty humour that any layman can easily identify with. Every character in the story is properly fleshed out – at times more than needed. And Shyam Benegal tells this character-driven story with utmost simplicity and straightforwardness.

That’s the beauty of ‘Welcome To Sajjanpur’. It’s simple, yet difficult to categorize in any particular genre.

Shreyas Talpade carries off the pivotal role with flamboyance and conviction. Amrita Rao is gracefully restrained. Ila Arun is perfectly cast. Divya Dutta is brilliant in a small role. Yashpal Sharma as the goon is superb while Ravi Kishen is just about passable.

Ideally, ‘Welcome To Sajjanpur’ would have been better without songs, but they don’t irk you like the ill-placed, deliberately squeezed-in item songs in any conventional Bollywood fare.

For even though ‘Welcome To Sajjanpur’ tells a simple and touching tale, it does so unconventionally.

Worth A Watch.

Like a fluctuating stock market, the graph of ‘Saas Bahu Aur Sensex’ moves up and down before reaching the predictable climax.

It’s unlikely to think of saas or bahu being interested in anything but idiot box, gossip, grapevine and back-biting. But in this movie, directed by Shona Urvashi, the ladies indulge in – apart from the aforesaid activities – some serious share trading with the help of a straight-talking and soft-hearted stock broker (an endearing Farooq Sheikh). Contrary to the adage, he turns out to be the man behind the women’s success.

Kiron Kher plays Binita Sen, a divorcee from Kolkata who moves into a housing society in Mumbai with her daughter Nitya ( Tanushree Dutta ). While Binita forms a kitty party group with other women in the society, Nitya finds a friend in her neighbour Ritesh ( Ankur Khanna ) and lands a job in a call centre.

Meanwhile, Binita meets a Parsi stock broker Feroz Sethna ( Farooq Sheikh ) to sell some old shares, thereby sparking off rumours in the entire housing society that something is brewing between her and the man.

Feroz, like a true financial adviser, guides Binita to invest wisely in the stock market. And before you could munch your popcorn, the entire gaggle of giggly and gossipy ladies, inspired by Binita, hop on the bandwagon and invest in the stock market, even though their husbands remain blissfully ignorant of the numbers on the Dalal Street.

On the parallel is a love triangle between Nitya, Ritesh and Kirti ( Masumeh Makhija ). Nitya has a soft corner for Ritesh, but he is in a relationship with Kirti. Kirti, however, is a manipulative girl with shifting affections.

‘Saas Bahu Aur Sensex’ has a few feelgood moments, but on the whole, the movie fails to click. Firstly, the duration of the film is painfully long with a couple of unnecessary sequences (like the television show). Secondly, the overstretched love triangle takes the sap out of what could have been an interesting story of a bunch of middle-aged ladies making fortunes in share market.

Director Shona Urvashi has given a couple of very fine touches to the film (the bonhomie between the kitty partying women is rocking) but she has fallen short of seamlessly binding the subplots in the story. On top of it, the film’s below-average music only jars your eardrums.

Kiron Kher and Faroukh Sheikh make this film watchable with their charming screen presence and brilliant performances. Tanushree looks visibly uninterested in enacting her part, while Masumeh is suitably cast in the role of a girl looking to noose a rich guy. Ankur Khanna performs well in a few scenes. Sharon Prabhakar and Lillette Dubey add a few funny moments.

‘Saas Bahu Aur Sensex’ is no laugh riot, but it does have ample light-hearted moments. And those who have been rattled by the after-effects of the US economic meltdown on the Dalal Street might find a momentary respite to see the sensex figure touching the 30 thousand mark in the film.
